Do You Need an Electrician?

by | Nov 27, 2015 | Electricians and Electrical

The lights are flickering, your wiring is a jumbled mess, or you have to wire a new addition on an existing structure. Many people assume that they have the know-how to fix these problems on their own. But, do they? You might feel confident in your home-repair abilities, but before you take on an electrical problem you need to understand the essentials of an electrician.

The Danger Involved

Bad wiring can lead to electrical fires. It can also cause your appliances major damage. Unless you have been trained and licensed as an electrician, you need to keep your hands off wiring, fuse boxes, and anything with a current. This is important for your own safety as well; electrical shocks are no joke and can be life threatening.

The Electrician’s License

Anyone who boasts an electrician’s license has completed hours both on the job and in the classroom. Electricians begin as apprentices and then work to gain certification and their licenses. A licensed electrician does not need to be supervised by a more highly-trained electrician, however they must also be a registered electrical contractor in order to do some types of work.

Once a licensed electrician has enough hours and further tests completed, he is eligible to become a master electrician. A master electrician is able to do all electrical work from the planning stage to installation to maintenance.

Choosing the Right Electrician

If you’ve come to the realisation that your project requires a licensed electrician, there are a few things to consider before hiring someone.  First, give weight to the reviews and recommendations you can find from actual clients. You want to use an electrician who is highly trained, punctual, clean, and honest.

Next, ask to see the electrician’s license and insurance card. You can look up electricians online in some states’ databases to find their qualifications. You should also make sure that the insurance the electrician uses is current. Should an accident occur, you want to know your electrician can cover the damages.

Finally, don’t be afraid to get bids from multiple companies. Remember that the lowest price doesn’t automatically mean that company is going to be the best choice for you. Take into consideration how quickly the company is to communicate with you, the professionalism of all the staff, and what timeline the electrician quotes. Once you have collected all your information and understand the essentials of an electrician, you’ll be ready to start on your electrical project with confidence.
